My email today is slightly different from the first two I sent. It’s also a bit longer than usual, so here it goes…

Take the story of Elise...

Elise worked as a nurse for a small, private hospital in Austin, Texas, for almost 30 years, devoting her energy and dedication to patients of the geriatric ward. 

It was hard work, but caring for people is just part of her DNA.

But something happened in those years...

Because of her work’s shifting schedule, there were moments she’d miss essential events in her life. 

For example, she missed her daughter’s recitals too many times. Or she got called back to the hospital in the middle of an anniversary dinner with her husband.

It affected her marriage. Her daughter had gone cold towards her.

She also had to deal with office politics, being bypassed several times for a promotion she deserved.

She was disillusioned by the grand narrative of “work hard, provide for your family, and live happily ever after.”

In fact, and despite her best efforts, she lived in a place where what she did was never enough.

Not enough cash. Not enough money for travel. Not enough for her family.

So despite Elise’s efforts to give her family a good life, it just wasn’t enough.

In her eyes, she wasn’t enough.

She thought the problem was merely a lack of money. But as she discovered, her money problems were rooted in something much more profound...

She discovered how she was thinking created financial problems that eventually cascaded into different aspects of her life.

That’s right. The lack of money, as with her other life concerns (her marriage, her relationship with her daughter) were all interrelated. 

And it was all rooted in her “mindset.”

She learned that the mind (if not optimized) can be a prison. That if she didn’t learn to control and manage how she thought and felt, that nothing would change in her life.
