Hi there,

I’m such a sucker for stories, especially if the stories impart great wisdom.

So, here’s a quick one…

There was a wise old master who lives on top of a hill.  He lived by himself but occasionally, people from below would visit to seek his counsel.

The master was known to have answers to everything and had been proven right time and again.

One time, a skeptical young man had decided to challenge the wisdom of the old master.  He truly believed that the old man wasn’t wise and didn’t have answers to everything.

Together with his band of young friends, they went to see the master. Outside the master’s house on the hill, the young man shouted.

“Master! Wise they say you are,” he called.  “Come and show us and prove this claim is true!”

The old master opened his door, “Can I help you with anything?”

“People say you’re wise and have answers to everything—prove it—what am I holding behind my back?” the young man asked in a taunting manner.

The wise old man thought quietly for a moment. He could make out the faint sounds of a bird chirping.

“I do not say I know everything for that would be impossible,” the old master said.  “However, I do believe you are holding a bird in your hands.”

The young man was furious!

How could the old man had possibly known he had a bird?

Not ready to accept defeat, he schemed once more. He would ask the old master whether the bird was alive or dead.

If the master said, "alive," he would crush the bird. If the master answered, "dead," he would set the bird free to show it’s alive. 

Either way, he could prove the old man wrong.

"Very good," he said. "It is a bird. But tell me, is the bird I am holding alive or dead?"

The old master gave the boy a sweet big smile and said…

“Young man, the bird’s life is in your hands.”

Wonderful story, right?
