Farmers Market online options during the Winter

As local Farmer Markets shutdown for the winter, many growers/producers are left with limited markets and no options for their perishable products.  However, there may continue to be an option that hasn't been fully tapped yet.
Online Sales of of product has grown immensely during the 2020 pandemic.  With platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and Craigslist, producers are able to connect directly with consumers.
However, there are some important factors to consider when selling through social media.

  1. Inventory Management - unlike a Farmers Market, you cant' see an immediate drop in inventory.  Utilizing some sort of organization system to make sure you can deliver on promises.  Microsoft Excel or Google sheets are simple ways to do so.
  2. Communicate Expectations - Pickup times and places as well as available quantities are important items for Growers/Producers to let customers know.  Especially around the upcoming Holidays, if you are unable to meet time constraints, it is important to communicate in advance to potential customers.
  3. Think Outside The Box - Just because the Farmers Market isn't operating, doesn't mean you can't coordinate with a local brick and mortar to utilize their parking lot of set pickup times.  Find ways to establish yourself as your own BRAND  AMBASSADOR by setting yourself apart from local box stores.
Even though the season for Traditional Farmers Market are drawing to a close for 2020, consumers are still demanding fresh products they would normally find at farmers markets.  See what you can do online to meet your customers needs!
