Hi {first_name},

“I had a claim then my insurance company dropped me.”

I run into this phrase a lot. However, I rarely hear something like, “my agent helped explain how best to avoid being dropped.”

Bluntly, the key is to avoid repetitive, small, or preventable claims.  Insurance companies are for profit businesses and when they think a risk is or may become unprofitable, they seek to reduce their exposure by removing that risk.

Claims that occur more than once suggest nothing was done to reduce the likely hood of it happening again.  If a tree branch falls on your home in June, have a tree service prune up any other branches that may fall later in the year.

Claims less than $5000 ($10,000 for water damage) are typically seen as small claims.  Whenever possible it may be best to pay these claims out of pocket to prevent rate increases or potentially being dropped.

Preventable claims are very problematic.  Certain claims can be completely avoided such as ice dams or fire damage due to your grill being too close to the house.  To prevent ice dams, remove the snow from your roof, install more insulation in the attic, install heat tools or chemical agents to prevent the dam from forming.  Truly the best prevention is finding a way to remove the snow from the roof.  The grill example should be a little more obvious.  Keep the grills at least ten feet from your home.
