Hi {first_name},

Congratulations on adding a new driver to your house! As an insurance agent, I have a unique perspective on this exciting new change.
This marks a very bittersweet milestone which, unfortunately, comes with some stress. There are a few things that families can do to make sure that their kids stay safe.

  1. SPEEDING– For many teens, driving fast is just part of driving (and part of being a teen). However, excessive speed is a factor in about one-third of teens’ crashes.

What can you do? As a parent, you’ll want to model the right behaviors and be explicit about what you expect from your teen. Don’t drive over the speed limit yourself – and let them know that you expect them to stay under all speed limits too. I also recommend that parents and teens set up a driving contract with clear boundaries and expectations for their teens.

  1. RISK – Although teens are less likely to drink and drive than adults, their crash risk is higher when they do. Other distractions can be just as serious- like texting and driving.

What can you do? Again, model the behavior you want them to use and reinforce your expectations of your teen. Don’t drink and drive. Don’t text, make phone calls, eat, or get distracted while you drive – and maybe they won’t either. Again, this is a great thing to include in a driving contract.Another thing to note here is texting your teens.Up until they became licensed you could text them at any point of the day seemingly without worry. Now, it is a good idea to think about where your teen may be before you shoot them a text.If we limit the number of texts received while driving it limits the possibility of the driver reading or responding to said text.

  1. INEXPERIENCE – Teens often crash because they don’t know what to do to get out or stay out of trouble when something happens quickly. They’re more likely to crash at night and with young passengers in the car.

What can you do? Give them lots of supervised driving time with you, both daytime and nighttime. The more experience they have with you or other adult drivers, the better drivers they’ll become. You may also want to limit your teen’s nighttime driving and ability to drive with other teens in the car.Additionally, I strongly recommend looking into the InControl Crash Prevention program. It may be the best advanced driver training offered in Massachusetts and Dolan & Maloney negotiated a discount for our clients.

At the end of the day, driving is a fun and exciting new step for your family. Please know that I’m here for you if the need arises.
