Once up a time anyone could rank for just about any keyword. Adwords was cheap. And gas was cheaper than water - at least in Texas, they say.
 
Every day Google runs experiments to work out how to make more money. For Google.
 
One day they slapped SEOs with Panda. Blackhats with Penguin. eCommerce with Shopping. Then they slapped both organic and paid with the Right Side Wipe-out. (Stop press: latest on the wipe-out - top ads now getting more than 80% of traffic, up from mid-70s.)
 
Because of that, it gets more and more time consuming to find customers using your skills - though it makes your skills more valuable to your clients.
