{first_name},

We mitigated a DDoS attack against your site on January 28, 2019.

Since January 1, we've noticed a 3x to 10x increase in the number of hacking attempts made against your (and other client) sites.

Based on today's massive attack, the previous attempts were designed to probe our cloud and its capabilities.

Starting at around 11:30 am PST we began to notice server degradation which prompted a system-review.

By around 2pm PST some clients began complaining their sites were registering errors when loaded. As the volume and severity of the challenge increased, we shifted our footing. We moved from one of diagnosing a glitch in our cloud to recognizing a deep and wide-scale denial of service attack.

Our mitigation protocol requires that we immediately perform sweeping core updates. We created this protocol to grab up-to-the-minute security patches. These patches impact many layers including cloud architecture as well as WordPress itself.

At the same time we also made changes to our cloud configuration. This change allows more on-demand resource allocation to the affected systems. (We have allocated roughly 800% more "on-demand" resources to those systems.)

Finally we have deployed an extra "under attack" security layer. (This layer will likely be invisible to you and your clients.)

The above, combined with the other elements we put in place, should deal with future attacks that try to overwhelm our environment.

I'm pleased to report that by around 5:50 pm PST the DDoS attack was fully mitigated and web service returned to normal.

As you can imagine, keeping pace with hackers is a game evolving whack-a-mole. Today's hackers are equipped with technology leaked from the CIA and NSA that give them  more power than was available 5 years ago.

This is why we have multiple layers of defense... and why we can be so responsive to such massive attacks.

As an aside, I'm also happy to report there were zero compromises to data or systems. The environment continues to be hyper-secure.

If you have further questions, please let me know.
