Choosing the right Personal Injury Protection limits

What is PIP and what options are available?

Should you limit your maximum benefits?

Before the reform, Michiganders were required to purchase Unlimited Personal Injury Protection (PIP). After the reform, there are new limited PIP options available. PIP covers allowable medical expenses resulting from a car accident regardless of fault. This coverage is explained further in the provided attachment.

In order to exclude PIP benefits an individual must be covered qualified health plan: Qualified Health coverage must not exclude or limit auto accident injuries and must have an individual deductible of no more than $6,000.  Coverage under both Medicare Parts A and B also constitutes qualified health coverage. Coverage under Medicaid, however, is not considered qualified health coverage.

Limiting PIP can be a cost saving measure, but we encourage you to consider all options when shopping your insurance to ensure the right level of protection for yourself and your family.

Unlimited PIP can be a real life-saver!

What would be the reason to limit those benefits?

There are benefits to keeping Unlimited PIP just as there are benefits to lowering the limit. Keep in mind that PIP does not end with policy expiration if injuries are sustained during the policy period. While reducing or excluding PIP can help to save on premium, you may be left with medical bills not covered. Carefully consider all available options for your unique situation.
