Hi {first_name},

By now you may have seen our new TV commercial from our new citizens group, Build Pueblo, Not Jails. If not, you can click here to view it.

While Coronavirus has wreaked havoc on Pueblo's economy, we're concerned that Commissioner Garrison Ortiz only seems focused on one topic.

Garrison Ortiz is obsessed with building a new jail… even during the Covid-19 crisis!

County Commissioner Garrison Ortiz is reviving his washed up plan to build a new $100 Million jail during the heat of Coronavirus! Even though Pueblo County Voters have now rejected Garrison’s new jail three consecutive election cycles, that hasn’t stopped him from pushing his failed agenda during the dark night of Coronavirus.

Voters Have Rejected Garrison Ortiz' New Jail Plan

Ortiz Jail Proposal Defeated 65%-35%

November 5th, 2019

During four years in office, it seems like the only issue Garrison Ortiz has cared about has been building a jail. He’s already wasted $200,000 on a no-bid contract to try convince us taxpayers to tax ourselves to build a jail. That’s a lot of our money already wasted on his glossy jail task force report [Source; Resolution 17-168].

Now, Garrison Ortiz has a new plan! He wants to use marijuana tax revenues to build a jail, even though voters have never approved using marijuana tax dollars for a jail. [Source; Ortiz Assembly Speech 3/28/2020].

In the meantime, we're learning that maybe we don't need a new jail. Garrison's newest plan is to build a 600 person jail on Pueblo Boulevard. That's not increasing our jail capacity.

We can save money by remodeling the existing one. Plus, hundreds of low risk individuals (like traffic violations) have been released from Pueblo County jail because of Coronavirus risk.

If these people can be released now, and our community remains safe maybe we can keep the low risk people out of jail ALL the time [Source; KKTV 3/26/20 "Pueblo jail releasing "low-level offenders" due to coronavirus concerns"].

With Covid-19 wreaking havoc in Pueblo, shouldn’t Garrison Ortiz be working on more important issues?
